About the artist

Clésinger Jean-Batiste said Auguste (Born in Besançon, October, 20, 1814 - Died in Paris, January, 6, 1883)
Sculptor and painter, he learned from his father, academic sculptor Georges Philippe Clésinger who took him to Roma in 1832. He was accepted within the workshop of Thorvaldsen, the noe-classical Danish sculptor who influenced a great amount of his works. He came back to Paris in 1838 and lived in Switzerland, Florence and Besançon for a while before settling in Paris in 1845. Conceited, he did not seem to be getting on very well with his peers and relatives. In 1894, in Paris, his mythological compositions, his equestrian effigies, his busts representing famous celebrities, and some of his wildlife statues, most of them made out of marblre, owe him numerous rewards. His most sought-for sculptures were reduced in keeping with the Collas way and edited in different size of bronze sculptures by Barbedienne. Most of them are marbles sent from Italy.
