Massive bronze sculpture after Michelangelo, representing Laurent de Médicis, ancient green patina. Michelangelo's work was issued for Laurent de Médicis' tombstone at San Lorenzo in Florence. This sculpture represents the ideal of the perfect man from the French Renaissance. The Maison Barbedienne reproduces here a masterpiece from Antiquity. Aphrodite of Milo, Diana of Gabies, Laurent of Médicis, were among the very first works of great museums to be reproduced by this parisian Maison. Signed on base F.Barbedienne, founder and stamped Collas, mechanical reduction.

About the artist

Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE was a french industrialist. Very well known for his bronze foundry for art reproduction. He came to Paris ever since he was thirteen. He was the apprentice of a saddler and then worked in several different stores before starting a business of his own, rue Notre-Dame-De-Lorette, in 1833 where he managed to earn some money before associating with Achille COLLAS who had just created a way of reproducting bronze and on a smaller scale, art objects. In 1839, Barbedienne founded the Maison where he copied most of the statues owned by european museums in bronze. Subjects chosen were often allegoric and extracted from Antiquity. the Venus de Milo is one of the first example. The first edition contract was signed with RUDE on march, 22 1843. After 1848, the society grew their activities working with renowned sculptors, and manufacturing furniture, ceiling lights, mantelpiece ornaments... His head office were then located 30 Boulevard Poissonière and workshops 63 rue de Lancry.
